About
The Tohoku Robotic Systems Laboratory, jointly led as the Yamazaki–Bezerra Laboratory, is a broad intelligent robotics laboratory at Tohoku University. We study robotic systems that perceive, move, manipulate, communicate, reason, and adapt in real-world environments.

In recent years, the scope of automated machines has significantly expanded. Robots increasingly operate in spaces that were not originally designed for them — homes, urban areas, and disaster sites. These environments demand advanced recognition capabilities, so that machines can accurately understand the objects and events around them, and the ability to act on that understanding.
Our research focuses on enhancing these recognition and manipulation capabilities. We pursue fundamental research, integrate findings into practical applications, and study the mechanisms that automated systems need in order to work in real, everyday environments rather than only in factories.
We are building robots that are useful working systems — capable of handling difficult-to-model objects, flexible materials, uncertainty, and changing environments — and we study how humans and intelligent machines can cooperate.

The laboratory was established in April 2025, following Professor Yamazaki's transfer to Tohoku University.
The laboratory maintains shared facilities for robotic experiments, computing, and hardware fabrication. These resources support research across the four research pillars and include spaces for building and refining robot parts, running experiments, and supporting software and AI development.
